Poker is a game of people played with cards and money.

But, if you don't entirely understand how the betting works, the money can be very confusing.

Limit Poker
The most basic form of Poker is structured by limits. In Limit the structure is set by a small bet and a big bet. During the first two betting rounds you may only bet and raise in increments of one small bet. The final two betting rounds you may only bet and raise in increments of one big bet. For example you are playing a $2/$4 Limit game. In the first two rounds of betting you may bet $2 or raise $2. You may not bet $4 or $6 unless you are raising someone by $2. In the final two betting rounds the structure is exactly the same but the dollar limit has doubled to $4. Again you may not bet $8 or $12 unless you are raising a previous bet by $4.

No Limit Poker
No Limit Texas Hold'em is the Cadil...never mind, that just gets annoying. You can play no limit for pennies or for hundreds and thousands of dollars. This is possible because each table sets a maximum and minimum buy-in with structured blinds relative to the maximum buy-in. On following betting rounds you may not bet in an amount lower then the big blind and each raise has to be as much or more then the last bet or raise. For example you are playing a no limit game with $2-$4 set as the blinds. That means that you must call the $4 blind or you can raise. When you raise you have to at lease raise $4 because that was the size of the last bet. Say you decide to raise $10 to $14, that would mean the next person if they wanted to raise would have to raise it by a minimum or $10 since that was the size of the last raise.

Pot Limit Poker
Pot limit is set up much like no limit except you are limited in your raise to the total amount of money in the pot. Again each table sets a maximum and minimum buy-in. For example, If there is $10 in the pot and someone bets $5 to you and you wish to raise, you may raise anywhere from $5 to $20. This is because there is $20 in the pot after you call so your raise is allowed to be $20, be sure to avoid string bets.

Spread Limit Poker
In spread limit you have a range of allowable bets, such as a $2-$6 spread limit. The blinds in $2-$6 are set at $1 and $2. Then raises are allowed between $2 and $6. If someone has raised more then $2 then the minimum raise is equal to or more then the last raise but no more then $6.

All betting especially no limit and pot limit betting can be complicated further by all-ins, side pots and table stakes. See advanced betting topics
